Why do home insurance companies ask about permanently installed heat source?

One of the questions found in a homeowners insurance application is about how you keep your home warm in the winter.  Now I know that in Laredo, TX winter only lasts about 1 week, but the question of home heating in a home insurance policy always comes up.  I remember going through “winter” months in Laredo without ever turning the heat on!  Do we really need a permanently installed heat source in Laredo, TX?  To you or me, maybe not.  But to an insurance company, how you keep your house warm when it gets cold is always a concern.  One of the biggest causes of house fires is attributed to portable space heaters.  Thus, it’s completely understandable for an insurance company know about how your home is kept warm and if they want to take on a risk of insuring a house with no permanently installed heat source.

Health Insurance Open Enrollment in Laredo, TX

Hello Everyone!  Health insurance open enrollment begins from November 1st to December 15th 2018.  Because of the Affordable Care Act, aka, Obamacare, health insurance companies cannot deny you from buying medical insurance regardless if you have any prior medical problems.  In addition, a health insurance company can’t charge more money because you are sickly either.  In fact, there are no medical questions to answer!  But, if you miss the date, that is, you wait until after December 15th, then you can generally buy an individual health insurance plan ONLY if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.  What is a Special Enrollment Period you may ask.  Taken from healthcare.gov, a Special Enrollment Period is “A time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for health insurance. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you’ve had certain life events, including losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child.”  You usually have 60 days from the event to enroll in a new health plan.

What is bobtail coverage in a truckers insurance policy in Laredo, TX?

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure to serve many truck drivers insurance needs in the Laredo, TX area.  One question comes up often.  What is bobtail insurance in a truckers policy?  Bobtail coverage is when you are operating your rig without the trailer.  For example, you might drive your 18-wheeler without a trailer to the mechanic’s shop for general maintenance.  In that circumstance, you wouldn’t be on dispatch nor pulling a load, so Bobtail Insurance Coverage would be needed.  So where does the Truckers Liability Coverage come in?  Semi truck owners who are leased by another trucking company, may be working under that trucking company’s motor carrier authority.  If so, the coverage should lie under the trucking company’s insurance policy.  I must mention that I always recommend to confirm coverage before driving a semi-truck.  You need to confirm where the coverage kicks in.  Confirm if there is coverage when you are on dispatch or not, and when you are pulling a load or not.  There should be no gray area here.  On the other hand, if you purchased a Truckers Liability policy  through an independent agent and the policy contains “Trucker’s Liability,” then you’d have coverage whether your pulling a load or not.

Do I really need life insurance and where can I buy life insurance in Laredo, TX?

Do I really need life insurance? That’s a common question I encounter as an auto and home insurance agent.  The short answer is, it depends.  People buy life insurance for different reasons.  Firstly, you must ask yourself one question: What is the goal of life insurance?  For some people it’s about leaving “something” behind for when they pass on.  Think of a grandma buying a life insurance policy with the intent of leaving the proceeds to her grandchild.  Some people use it with the goal of cash accumulation within a universal life insurance policy.  Although, in my opinion, life insurance should not be treated like a savings account, some wealthy individuals choose universal life policies for cash accumulation.  The most common, and perhaps the most important reason to buy life insurance is for “income replacement.”  Ask yourself this question, if you were to pass away, would your surviving spouse have the money to pay for monthly living expenses, such as mortgage, utilities, food, etc?  Income replacement by far is the most common reason to buy life insurance and probably the most common type of life insurance used for income replacement is term insurance.  Term insurance covers you for a predetermined period of time for example, 20 years.  It is the cheapest form of life insurance.  So if you are wealthy enough where there is never a lack of money, then perhaps your better off not buying life insurance.

Does the color of my car affect the price of auto insurance in Laredo?

In short, no. However, other factors do influence the rate. For example, auto insurance in Laredo, TX might be a bit cheaper than auto insurance in San Antonio, TX. That is because San Antonio traffic is much more congested than Laredo traffic. Also, since there is more traffic congestion in San Antonio, there are also more accidents. Other things that affect the price of auto insurance is driving history, claims history, and yes, sometimes, credit history. For example, we represent carriers that either consider credit history in the insurance premium and carriers that don’t. Call us for more information about that. (956) 729-9500

I’ve just had a car crash in Laredo. What do I do next?

This is a question we hear on a regular basis.  Although the situation may be stressful, there are a couple of things to  consider when reporting a claim to your insurance company.  Firstly, it is always recommended to file a police report.  Although a police report is not necessarily proof of who was at fault, the officer at the scene can report what he sees such as road conditions, how much damage a vehicle sustained, report any injuries and issue citations.  Some things you’ll find in the police report are, year make and model of the vehicles involved, the driver information, and car insurance information such as insurance company and policy number.  The last part is very helpful in filing a claim.

Secondly, report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.   Your insurance policy provisions indicate that you must file a claim promptly!  If you wait too long, it can jeopardize your coverage.

So if your involved in an car crash, file a police report and call your agent as soon as possible!

Health Insurance Plans in Laredo, TX

The health insurance open enrollment period has begun.  According to the Affordable Care Act (aka, Obamacare) you may purchase health insurance during designated times of the year called open enrollment or during a special enrollment period.  Because we live in a border town, Laredo, TX, many families have members that do have current visas.  But don’t let that discourage you from buying health insurance.  Although you must reside in our country legally to purchase health insurance for yourself, the law does not allow us to ask the immigration status of other family members who are not applying for health insurance.  The immigration status will be asked only of people applying for health insurance and that’s it.

Do I Need to Add All Drivers on My Auto Insurance Policy in Laredo, TX?

Do I need to disclose all the drivers in my auto insurance policy in Laredo, Texas?  My sarcastic answer to that question is, “Do you want to commit insurance fraud?”  Of course, you must disclose all drivers on an auto insurance policy!  Most car insurance policies will have coverage for permissive drivers, which are drivers that have your permission to use your car but DO NOT have regular access to your car such as a household member.  A friend visiting you one evening for a barbeque uses your car to go the grocery store for supplies would be considered a permissive driver and thus would have coverage on MOST, not all, car insurance policies.  On the other hand, a household resident or someone who has regular access to your car must be listed on an auto insurance policy.  Should an accident happen, an insurance claim, especially a large one, could be denied.  Don’t be fooled by the insurance agent that tells you otherwise.  Should you encounter such unscrupulous agent fire him and hire an honest one.  Remember, it is YOUR SIGNATURE that goes on the dotted line!

Are Insurance Rates Higher in Laredo, TX than other Cities?

This is a question that we are asked often especially when someone moves to Laredo, TX.  The answer is quite simply, “It depends.”  Home insurance rates are typically lower in Laredo compared to, for example Houston.  However, there is an upward trend due to an extremely high number of law suits filed against home insurers in Webb County.  But that topic I will leave for another discussion.  Insurance premiums are “zip-code sensitive.”  Generally speaking, car insurance rates in Laredo, TX are lower than that of other bigger cities in Texas.  However, driver age, marital status, homeowner status, and such will influence the discounts that are available thus influencing the insurance cost.  It is good to shop for auto insurance with an independent insurance agent.  An independent insurance agent could shop for car insurance with several insurance companies thus optimizing your chance of keeping insurance costs down.
